Our community is privileged to be very diverse. Expressions And we took advantage of that. We have created a series of after school programs in collaboration with various organizations and are paying off.
Here you can see the drop in learning center kids ( With a goal to be nurturing and offer educational support, the Drop-In Learning Center has been running numerous before- and after-school programs since 1970. During the school year, the center provides nutritional snacks and academic support.), using their creativity and already working for their future!

Lower Space: Laura Viñas, Artist in Residence from Argentina: For her first solo show at Expressiones Cultural Center, Viñas will fill the lower Space with three of her distinct visions of the world in Mundis in Mundis (a multimedia installation).

“In the world portrayed in her Inevitable Drawings, she examines the human gaze as an instrument of power, dominance, and just maybe, shared understanding. From drawing she moves into photography, capturing the internal structure of the drawings , where gesture meets thought.

In the world of her Pampa Landscapes, the emptiness and boundless spaces gives her the opportunity to reflect on silence, distance and belonging.

In Flyland, the works make reference to the potential for mischief that certain insignificant yet powerful beings hold within. She chose to illustrate this through a metaphor; “flies and their uncanny similarity to human beings”.

Expressiones Cultural Center is very proud to share with our entire community the Performance and Art Opening Reception of Lucia Reategui, visual and performing artist from Peru. Reategui comes to Expressiones a selected artist-in-residence though the Latin American collaborative program between I-Park & Expressiones Cultural Center.

LUCIA REATEGUI produces a performance/ installation piece that explores the obsession and perversion surrounding feminism. An encounter with a lover provokes an amorous duel, and the woman murders and swallows his masculinity with the objective of making him a part of her. In this banquet, death becomes a continuous life, transmuting the energy of her husband's body as a structural and vital power to her own feminine nature.

Personifying a woman in her 40's, the artist's performance is done in four specific times in which each transform into "Objetos de Deseo": Hide (Apron), Bones (dishes), meat (Banquet), hair (embroidery). These objects do not represent the lack of something, on the contrary, are manifest will, of doing, becoming "active affects" that produce reality. In this way and based on a need is the desire that generates the objects, being the productive power of life: The desire is revolutionary, challenging, active, aggressive, fertile, conqueror.

“Entering to a New Uniververce”

Expressiones Cultural Center is very proud to share with our entire community the Art of Jairo Robinson. He comes to Expressiones Cultural Center as an artist-in-residence though our Latin American Artist in Residence Program and will have his Solo Art Show starting on October 8 and ending on November 3.

Jairo Robinson presents a body of acrylics on canvas and paper abstract artworks. Each one titled in the style of abstract works, alluding to the number and date of "construction / building ". Jairo Robinson’s constructivism takes the viewer on a journey that immerses them in his lines and shapes that try to dominate the irrational, making it the triumph of the real and unreal, and at the same time the triumph of the unattainable.

JAIRO ROBINSON (Lima, 1982), studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Lima between 2003 and 2007, graduating with the specialties of drawing and painting. He has presented his work individually at Forests (Yacana Rock Art & Bar, 2008), Construction (UNIFE Sacred Heart University, 2009), Paints (Hotel Los Delfines, 2010) and Inrush (Gallery Contemporary Art-Link, 2011).

In addition to participating in group shows held in major cultural centres and galleries in Peru, United States, Spain, Germany and England, his work is in the collections of the School of Art Emilio Caraffa (Córdoba-Argentina), in the Coliceo Roberto De Vicenzo (Buenos Aires-Argentina) and the Museum of the Americas (Miami-USA).

Expressiones Juried Show – ‘Love’

Expressiones Cultural Center invites local and regional artists to participate in their first Juried Exhibit. This juried exhibition, presented in the Expressiones gallery, 84 Bank Street, New London, will be focused on the theme of ‘Love’; love in all its forms: real, abstract, devotional, objective, etc.

The juror is Jeffrey W. Cooley, Director of the Cooley Gallery, in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Founded in 1981, the Cooley Gallery specializes in fine American paintings from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, including the Hudson River School, American Impressionism, and select contemporary artists.

The exhibit is open to all artists 18 years of age or older. All forms of media are welcome, but work must be original. Sculpture must be reasonable in weight. Work that is to be hung must measure 60 inches or less in either direction and be ready to hang with wire - no saw tooth hangers please.

First Prize - $250, Second Prize - $150, Third Prize - $100.

Prizes sponsored by Dominion Millstone Power Station.

The Piano Project

Summer 2011

Opening: to be announced.

We searched for local artists who would be intrigued with envisioning the piano as a canvas for art. Seven artists have been selected by Expressiones Cultural Center in New London and assigned to their pianos. The artists are all local and have been working hard in our community for years.

The Artist’s assigned pianos and places to be on display are:

Guido Garayochea, New London Public Library.

David Madacsi, Garde Arts Center.

Jesse Good, Parade Plaza, New London.

Gregory Bowerman, Hygienic.

Ignacio Gana, New London Habour Tower.

Mark Dixon & Julia Pavone, at The New London Train Station.

Each artist used a different visual language, technique and approach. They created unique pieces full in sensibility and that are meant to appeal to the ordinary public as they will be displayed in public spaces.

The artists have been working all the winter and spring, and the piano project will be seen this summer. Expressiones’s intention is to question the viewer to the Arts by surprising them with an unexpected piece of Art that is meant to be touched and enjoyed. A very different approach than in a Museum or Gallery.

Piano art plays New London's Parade

Seven local artists have been selected by the Expressiones Cultural Center in New London to do a piece of art with pianos that are placed around the city. Jesse Good was the artist of the piano piece in the Parade Plaza. The artwork is there with the intention to make the viewer question, touch and enjoy.

New London's Blob: It's b-a-a-a-ck

If a new art installation in New London were a low-budget sci-fi flick, it would be titled, "Return of the Blob."
Artist Jesse Good's 12-foot mass of orange urethane foam that had hung from a window at 46 Bank St. for two years before a city official hoping to rent the building ordered it removed in April 2010, has found a new home at the Parade Plaza in a modified form.
The familiar dripping contours are the same, but now, imbedded in them is a broken-down piano.
It's all part of a citywide exhibit by the Expressiones Cultural Center featuring piano-related sculptures by seven local artists.
You'll find the other works at various other locations, including the Garde Arts Center and Hygienic Art Gallery, with Mr. Good's piece, not far from the new whale tail fountain, the most visually provocative - especially considering the mixed reactions to The Blob's previous permutation.
While it hung on the outside of the downtown building some professed to be inspired by the image of a gooey gob of plastic, others said it resembled goat vomit, or worse. Either way, The Blob 2.0 should inspire debate, which perhaps is the whole point.
As they say, there's no accounting for taste. Go check it out and draw your own conclusions.

New London has been a mecca for artist’s taking advantage of the abundance of gallery and studio spaces in the area for years. There are also opportunities for artist’s to take up residence in new London such as at the artist co-op above the Hygienic Art galleries. Now other galleries such as Expressiones on 84 Bank Street have embraced the concept of residential artists.
When moving to its new location on Bank Street, Expressiones also acquired the apartment space above the gallery giving them the opportunity to house artists from outside of New London. The very first of these is painter and sculptor Ignacio Gana from Santiago Chile.
“We knew right away that when we started the Artist in residence program that Ignacio would be the first one,” says Guido Garaycochea, curator at Expressiones.
Starting out as an architect, Gana has been painting for ten years and sculpting for two. “Even when working as an architect. "I would always think in terms of paintings and when I got home I would paint,” Gana tells Patch. “It got to the point that I couldn’t focus on my job anymore,” so he put down the architect’s tools and picked up painter’s tools.
His first paintings were in black and white, a stark contrast to his current style of bold and bright colors. It was only after his first children (twins) were born that he decided to make the transition to bright colors. “I felt that having children was a big change in my life so I needed to make a change in my art to signify that,” says Ignacio.
When he had a third child just two years ago he decided that another change was in order, which is why he started to make sculptures out of bronze and wood. Many of his sculptures may look familiar to those who have seen his other works as the sculpted figures are often characters taken directly from his paintings.
Ignacio Gana’s paintings are currently on display at Expressiones in a show entitled “Trabajos Intervenidos” (Intervened Works). His sculptures were too large and heavy to bring on this trip but we can look forward to seeing them next year when he returns for a longer stay. For now banners with photographs of his sculpting work hang in the gallery.
While in New London Ignacio not only had the opportunity to have a solo show at Expressiones but was invited to be one of six artists involved in the New London Piano Project. In this initiative, pianos were given to artists with the instructions to simply make art. For his piece Ignacio painted a vast rolling green landscape on his piano.
“It was very short notice and I had to paint the piano very quickly,” Gana says. “My goal was to recover the past life of the piano”
Music has the ability to take us to different worlds when we hear it and Ignacio’s paintings invite you into a different often magical world when you view them. Therefore, painting on this musical instrument made a lot of sense for Ignacio. Gana will not be able to be present for the reception for the piano project, to be held later this month but a video interview will be shown during the event.

auction the following week at their new location - 84 Bank Street

As a fundraiser for Expressiones, the public is invited to watch a diverse group of artists paint flowers/ or vegetables or any garden theme at Expressiones Cultural Center in New London. Some of the participating artists include Sadie Davidson-Devore, Millie Donovan, Guido Garaycochea, Linda Peduzzi and Alyce Trebra. Artists will paint on the balcony or in the studio, in different mediums and styles.
These paintings, as well as other artist's pieces with a gardening/flowering/veg theme, will be for sale a week later, at the silent auction on Saturday, July 30. A portion of the proceeds will go to support Expressiones arts and culture events and free children's workshops.

Expressiones Cultural Center very proud and happy to meet our second anniversary in service to our beloved community. We have moved house and this new spectacular location overlooking the water we serve you better. New programs are running and already we see a greater flow of constantly coming Latin American artists to show their artwork to Expression, but films that reflect our culture are shown, more conferences that talk about what Hispanic DONE to all of both programs art, always free to the public.
It is now time to show our house to the community and celebrate diversity. That is why it has a pleasingly Expression show that will open this Saturday with the opening of our house and all its facilities. Volunteers will guide visitors through the facilities of Espressione, the main art gallery, multi-purpose basement, workshop and finally the Department for visiting artists and artists in residence.

Playwrite Michael Bradford and installation artist, Diane Barcelo come to Expressiones new lacation to share some poems and photograhs from their recent trip to the south of Spain where Michael was on a Fulbright fellowship.

Michael Bradford will read six poems by Spanish Master Poet Garcia Lorca. Those that With the help of Galician poet Eduardo Blanco-Amor, Lorca composed six poems with a wonderful darkness, infused with hues of gray and light blue. “Seis Poemas Gallegos.” These are not the poems you will find on the tourist website for Northern Spain, but they are the poems you will find if you want to know the truth about a place that does not float in the imagination but rather is rooted to the reality of the earth.

In two groups of photographs, Diane Barcelo records the backrooms of the Plaza de Toros in Granada. The one set shows the infirmary for injured toreadors. The other set is the animal slaughter area. These rather clinical spaces do not betray the violence or the spectacle of the bullfiht but reveal severe, sterile and simple rooms where death is met.

Earth Day originated in the 1970s - the time of free-spirited, tree-hugging hippies. That should explain a lot. Each year on April 22nd, we celebrate the birth of the environmental awareness movement. In the midst of anti-war protests, Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, witnessed a massive oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara, California. Nelson, who was a Senator in Wisconsin at the time, was so appalled and disturbed by the accident that he decided to harness the passion of anti-war protesters to spread the word about environmental consciousness. July 9: Special Dinner celebrating the 4th of July with the best view of the fireworks on the Thames River.

July 23: Celebrate the Independence of Peru with typical Peruvian food and live Andean Music.

$ 55 per person.

August 13: Celebrate the independence of Bolivia. There will be dishes from the "altiplano "and "lowlands." Both cuisines use ingredients native to the region.

August 27: Celebrate The Independence of Uruguay. Uruguayan cuisine is traditionally based on its European roots. It is influenced by the Mediterranean food from Italy, Spain, Portugal and France, but it also borrows from countries such as Germany and Great Britain along with African and indigenous mixtures.

September 10: Celebrate the Independence of Guatemala and El Salvador. Guatemalan and El Salvadorian cuisine reflect the multicultural nature of both countries.

September 17: Celebrate the Independence of Chile with a great selection of seafood paired with Chilean wines. Chilean cuisine derives mainly from the combination of Spanish cuisine with local Chilean ingredients. Later influences come from other European cuisines, particularly from Germany, Italy, Croatia, France and the Middle East.

The story, set in 1999, is told in flashback form. A recently retired Federal Justice Agent wants to write a book about an unsolved murder committed 30 years ago in a period of time where Argentina's history was marked by violence and death. Searching for an ending to his book, this older would-be writer makes a startling discovery that compels him to redeem his past and seize his future. The director Juan Jose Campanella, depicts this with a style that effortlessly juggles romance, comedy, suspense and political commentary. The project is co-sponsored by Expressiones Cultural Center of New London. About 15 students have worked on the acrylic paint mural for the past two months.
